Rajesh Tailang talks to Mamta Sonar about his film ‘Mukkabaaz’, working experience with Anurag Kashyap, Padmavati controversy and more…
Q. How your role is different from other film character?
A. Every actor tries to do different and challenging characters. My character in Mukkabaaz is obviously very different from the characters I have played earlier. This is the first time I play father of the hero. This man is a failed person. he is very cynical and negative in his approach towards life. Once he was also a very positive person but he could not achieve what you wanted in life so now he has become a bitter person. All the time he is cursing and taunting his son. He doesn’t want his son to become a boxer. As the film progresses their relationship changes. The Father-son scenes are really funny and they have a very kind of black humour to it so it was a fun to play this character called Vijay Singh.
Q. How was your experience working with Anurag Kashyap and why?
A. Working with Anurag Kashyap is a dream dream come true for every actor so obviously I also wanted to work with him for long. I thank Mukesh Chhabra for casting me and Anurag Kashyap for believing in me. Anurag Kashyap’s working style is quite similar to working in theatre. He gives lot of space, takes your suggestions and comes up with solutions which are really helpful because he is also an actor and that becomes advantage for actors working with him.
Q. We have seen Kashyap film before it is like Gang Of Wasseypur, Bombay Velvet and other . How Mukkabaz movies different from other movie?
A. Every Anurag Kashyap film has a mark of his style yet all films are quite different from each-other. I think this the first time it is a pure love-story. Film has very nice feel about it. Though it touches lot of sensitive issues yet film has humour and heart. As Anurag himself said once “ Mukkabaaz is a film you can watch with your family”
Q. As an actor what you want to say on Padmavat controversy ?
A. Padmavat or for that matter any film which has some controversy. I think no person or a group should be allowed to take law on it’s hand. No one should be allowed to threaten or harm anybody. If they have any problem with the film there is legal way of addressing your issues but you can not make mockery of the law of the land.
Q. What kind of role you are looking for and from which director you want to work with?
A. I feel lucky to have worked with best directors including Govind Nihalani, Ketan Mehta, Farhan Akhtar, Hansal Mehta, Richie Mehta, Kabir Khan, John Madden, Anurag Kashyap, Apoorva Lakhia, Neeraj Pandey. I wish to work with them again and again. There are lot of directors I want to work with, The list is long.
I want to play different and challenging roles. I have done lot of comedy in theatre and hope to do some light-hearted comedy in films as well.
