You have seen him in BHEJA FRY, RAB NE BANADI JODI and BADLAPUR, now you’ll see him in an absolutely new avatar in his upcoming film, GOUR HARI DASTAAN. He plays the role of an 80 year old freedom fighter who struggles to get an authentication of his contribution to the freedom movement. He plays the lead role in the bio pic. Since he has entertained us on every possible medium, television, films and theatre, we talk to Vinay Pathak about his views on the term method actor.
“Every theatre actor is not a method actor. It’s not necessarily the thing. How many people really know what method acting is? Not many. People have just generalised the term. There are many types of acting. It’s like a different technique to approach the craft of acting. It changes from actor to actor. There are many who are not method actors but still are excellent at the craft. Their approach is different. Method has become a synonym for a serious actor. Every actor goes through a process. If I have to do the role of an 80 year old man, I have to prepare myself for that. I’ll do my research and also act like an 80 year old man from a month before the shoot starts. It’s a technique. Yes it definitely is a hyped term. I think they don’t have a better term to replace it hence method actor is over-used nowadays. They can’t say arre woh enthu-cutlet serious theatre actor hai. So they just use the shorter term that is a ‘method actor’.”
