He is the master of class. His journey of eminence from Star Plus’ popular show ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ to &TV’s popular ‘Gangaa’, delineates his dexterity in acting as the personification of his persona over years. In conversation with The Free Press Journal, Hiten Tejwani talks exclusively about his passion, shows, relationships and more…
What has motivated you to stay consistent as an actor?
The passion has to be there for any profession. I am very passionate about my work. Many people having gained so many years of experience in the industry may take it for granted, I can’t reveal names. There are people who take it for granted such that whatever they will do or whatever now will be done, people will like it and that should not be the case. Everyday an individual is like a student and everyday it’s a new thing for an individual. One has to try new things or experiment to do a scene in a different way. One should love their job. I love my job; I love what I am doing; I love TV and camera and may be that’s why the fire is still there. This may sound clichéd but I am also hungry for meaty roles and good roles. I take on different kind of roles and I try to experiment. Its not such that I haven’t done a particular scene before, I have done it before may be some number of years back or umpteen number of times, but every time, I try to do it in a different way. The approach is different.
Have you distanced yourself from lead roles in order to focus on episodic show like Darr Sabko Lagta Hai?
No, nothing like that; if you go to see that was also a main role, I was the main antagonist. In all such kind of shows, one gets to play different roles which probably when doing a daily soap one will not get to do. The reason for doing such shows is- one can do it and feel that character for 4 days and its over. One can carry out with their routine work, thereafter. It’s a kind of experiment or riyaz for an actor to do different kind of roles. It can be creatively satisfying also. Off course, one gets to do so many things. Darr Sabko Lagta Hai has been directed by all the film directors and not by the usual TV director and its shot in a period of 4 days. One gets to work with brilliant and different directors. You have the liberty to take a scene or do it the way you want to do. The creative satisfaction is so much that I can’t tell you. It may sound episodic but I was the main lead in the show and I wanted to do something different. I did a negative character in that show. People have come to know that I can do negative character as well. I have always been doing positive roles but this was a complete negative role in the show.
Where will you be seen next?
I did Balika Vadhu. The show is going through a leap and my part is over in the show. They are doing its next season in which I am not required. I am doing Gangaa currently and definitely if something good comes up I will definitely take up something different. I took up Gangaa because it’s very different and the way they are going is very different and very nice. I am playing lawyer in the show. There are lovely scenes.
Being a father to your twins, how good are you as a father?
If you ask this to a father then he will never be able to answer that or say, ‘I am the best father’ or for that matter for the world or the mother to say that ‘he is the best father to the kids’ or if I say that then people would say that I am boasting about myself too much. Whatever time and how much ever time I get I love to spend with my kids. I try to tell them stories. Usually, I get very little time but whenever I have an off I am at home mostly with them. After their school and my shoot, we get some time and that is just the father and the kids time.
With many breakups doing around the Bollywood and television, how do you perceive your relationship with Gauri and how did you nurture your relationship so far?
I think the best part is the understanding and the romance. Secondly, we have accepted each other the way we are so there is no question of expecting the partner to change overnight or expect the partner to change you. The basics of any relationship is understanding and if until and unless its not there then nothing will fall into place. One cannot have only good phases in life otherwise life is boring. There are bad and good phases. The whole point is naturally if a couple is together in the bad then they will be together in the good also. I don’t know what is happening between couples and in the industry, why the relationships are falling or why the marriage is falling but the point is somewhere understanding is not there. One cannot pinpoint a particular thing without knowing the couple. I believe understanding is the important factor.
Any message to your fans?
