SAMVIDHAAN, a 10-part mini series on the Indian constitution is all set to hit the telly. The series is directed by none other than Shyam Benegal and is written by Shama Zaidi and Atul Tiwari and produced by RSTV- Rajya Sabha TV.
Actress Swara Bhaskar of RAANJHANAA fame will tell viewers the tale of how the Indian Constitution was born, offering interesting insights as the anchor of the TV series ‘Samvidhaan’. The series will be filmed partly within the Parliament of India.
Shares Swara Bhaskar, “I feel both honoured and privileged to be part of this prestigious venture and to be directed by a legend such as Shyam Benegal so early in my career. Having grown up watching ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’, it is very special for me to have worked with Shyam Sir, the man responsible for so much that is admirable in – and right about – Hindi cinema over the last 30 years. Possibly one of the most erudite people I’ve met, the time I was blessed to spend with Shyam Sir has been such a pleasure, a lesson and an eye-opener for me.”
She further adds, “When Atul (Tiwari) Sir first narrated to me a couple of episodes of ‘Samvidhaan’, I was stunned by how dramatic the story of the birth of the Indian Constitution was, and impressed by the glorious tale. Atul Sir and Shama Ma’am are stalwart writers of the industry and dramatising the Constituent Assembly debates into a drama of such apparent ease is a feat they must be applauded for. Just speaking their beautifully etched, poetic Hindi and Urdu dialogues has been my greatest pleasure and my toughest challenge. For the first time in the history of Indian film or television, a shooting has taken place within the actual precincts of the Parliament of India. I feel honoured to have been the sole actor involved in that shoot. I can say that after having shot for ‘Samvidhaan’, I am a doubly proud Indian. Our forefathers have envisaged and put together a Constitution for our country that is commendable in every way and the story of its birth is one that every Indian should be aware and proud of.”
Talking about Swara Bhaskar, Shyam Benegal says, “While casting for the anchor’s role for ‘Samvidhaan: The Making of the Indian Constitution’ I wanted someone with sensitivity, sensibility and knowledge of the history and politics of India; a person with good acting capability. The actor had to connect important historical incidents together and also have a graceful presence to attract the youth of our nation, so that they would feel connected to the events in the narrative. I am delighted to say, that after almost a year’s search, we found all these qualities and more in Swara Bhaskar.”
‘Samvidhaan’ tells the story about how the constitution of India came to be, what it is, and is based on the Constituent Assembly debates of 1946-1949 and on in-depth historical research. The TV series that features stalwarts of Hindi Art cinema like Rajit Kapoor, Ila Arun, Dalip Tahil, Divya Dutta, KK Raina, Sachin Kedekar, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Tom Alter and Neeraj Kabi among others, will be aired on the Rajya Sabha channel this Republic Day, January 26, 2014.
