The Meg is strictly for fans of Jason Statham and action adventure movies. The titular creature is a gargantuan prehistoric creature which poses a threat to a large chunk of humanity which includes the multi-cultural cast.

Based on Steve Alten’s bestselling sci-fi novel, MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror, this American-Chinese co-production ratchets up some tension as the giant Megalodon (abbreviated to the titular feminised short form) swims closer and closer to the surface near boats and beaches.

Unsurprisingly, many are killed in ferocious attacks. What on earth would Noah (who ferried animals and birds to safety in the Ark) have said or done! But the modern world is more Darfur than Eden and this movie extols themes of bravery, courage and self-sacrifice as our hero Jonas (Jason Statham) Taylor risks his life to try and save the helpless from a watery grave in a sunken submersible at the bottom of the ocean’s deepest canyon.

In the deep, the guilt-ridden Jonas finds himself re-encountering and challenging the deadly threat of the giant Carcharodon Megalodon, said to be the ancestor of the great white shark. It could have had shades of Jonah and the Whale but it doesn’t; preferring to draw from Jaws for inspiration. You can expect some thrills, spills and chills though in the sea, the red sea, the redblood-stained sea.
