Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu, who is known for her bold and bindaas choices of roles in the film industry, recently made an honest confession about differentiation of salary payment between popular actors and actresses. In a chat with Hindustan Times, Taapsee confessed that she can’t ask for the same salary as her co-stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Varun Dhawan and Akshay Kumar get. The Pink actress feels that people (irrespective of their gender) should be paid as per their capabilities.
In an interview, Taapsee said, “Maintaining pay parity is very important and I am in total favour of it. But right now, where I stand, I probably can’t say that I can command the same salary as my male counterparts in this or that film. Some of my male co-actors get a certain amount depending on the kind of openings they can get to a film, that the money their films are making. Let me take the name of Varun [Dhawan], be it Judwaa (2017) or October, his name does bring in audiences to theatres and give films good openings. This means that good money in a few days is guaranteed to the producer. At the end of the day, it’s show business, you earn money to make money.”
Taking Varun Dhawan, Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan as examples, she explained that since won’t be able to bring people to the cinemas as much as they would, she can’t ask for the same salary as them. Meanwhile, Taapsee will next be seen opposite Big B in Badla directed by Sujoy Ghosh. In 2018, Taapsee gave some powerful performances in films like Manmarziyaan, Mulk and Soorma.
