Earlier today, Hrithik Roshan revealed that his father and actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan had been diagnosed with early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat aka throat cancer. While many Bollywood celebs in the past have been in a fight with cancer in different forms, many not know of SCC that has struck senior Roshan. Below are some points that cover the causes and symptoms of throat cancer.
Causes
The squamous cell carcinoma develops in the squamous cells that line the throat. According to health websites, this type of throat cancer shows a strong association with alcohol consumption and smoking. Passive smoking, tobacco chewing and cigar smoking are also risk factors for the development of the same.
Apart from the internal consumption the other risk factors include occupational exposures to agents such as asbestos and perchloroethylene; radiation; dietary factors; a genetic predisposition to the development of throat cancer; and poor oral hygiene.
Another risk factor for throat cancer is infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread through sexual contact, particularly oral sex.
The average age bar for this type of cancer is above the age of 65. Also men are up to five times more likely to get cancer of the throat than women.
