Too Much Bling Is A Strict No-No… Not Blessed With A Long  Neck? Avoid Chokers. Self-Confessed Jewellery Aficionado Sonam Kapoor Shares Jewellery Dos And Don’ts With

.

f diamonds are your best friend, she should perhaps be the voice in your head guiding you and telling you what’s best for you. The fact of the matter is, you cannot fault her sense of style – she is a diva who knows fashion like the back of her hand. So who better than THE Sonam Kapoor telling you exactly how you should pick your favourite pieces of jewellery…

l Jewellery is a very personal statement. Different people accessorise according to their style sensibilities. What is your must-have accessory?

Either a statement necklace or a cocktail ring, I think both are beautiful in their own way. The right kind of neckpiece can instantly brighten up your outfit and bring in that glam factor. If you aren’t really into necklaces then wearing a statement cocktail ring adds that finishing touch!

l Do you believe different faces and body types should sport different types of jewellery? We see that rule being followed in clothes but when it comes to jewellery people seem to blindly follow trends…

I believe you have to be comfortable in what you’re wearing…that’s most important. When it comes to jewellery it does matter because wearing too much bling might look like a huge mess. I see this very often, wherein people try to replicate what’s on the runway or what their favorite stylista is wearing.

For people who do not have long necks, wearing chokers looks odd. If you are into western attire keep it subtle, simple; if you are into Indian attire and the outfit has ornamental work don’t wear diamonds – opt for kundan jewellery. I absolutely love kundan!

I believe the one thing that attracts my attention is the creativity, quirkiness, wearability factor and design when it especially comes to jewellery. I am always on the lookout for new concepts and accessories I can add to my collection. I also really love classic pieces.

Amongst the many jewellery items you might own, which is your personal favourite?

I absolutely love everything; favourite is a very limited word!

l  Are there any precious stones you are partial towards?

The amethyst diamond is so beautiful, it suits all skin tones. It has a divine-like shine to it; it’s subtle and mysterious at the same time.

l When you choose a piece for yourself, do you lean more towards traditional cuts or do you like to have some radical pieces of jewellery?

Depends on the outfit I’m wearing, but more often I see myself more drawn towards contemporary quirky jewellery.

l  You had once said that you get your sense of accessorising from your mother. Tell us a little more about this influence…

I love all the jewellery my mom owns. Most of her jewellery classifies as Vintage and Antique and I love that style of jewellery. Growing up, I’ve seen my mom dress up and always played around with her make-up and jewellery. So apart from my being my super mom, she is also my fashion inspiration!

l  How much do you think the Indian woman and her sense of style has changed with time and with movies?

Over the years, we see a rise in people following specific trends that were seen in a particular movie. Take a film like ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ which had exquisite and royal jewellery made; the costumes and the jewellery actually brought the character alive. Over time, women have become more experimental when it comes to wearing bridal jewellery or accessorising Indian outfits like the saris and the shararas.

In my opinion, it all comes down to your comfort and the confidence with which you can carry the outfit. Whether western or traditional wearing the right amount of jewellery with the right kind of make-up can make or break your entire ensemble.
