Fresh from the accolades that her film MASAAN won at Cannes, Richa Chadha is on a high but thankfully not floating on air, either. Yes, despite the fact that she walked the famed Cannes Red Carpet, on the heels of stars like Michael Caine and Rachel Weisz.
Instead she is more attached than ever to her MASAAN team, comprising co-actors Vicky Kaushal and Shweta Tripathi, director Neeraj Ghaywan, producer Vikramaditya Motwane and writer Varun Grover. She describes her role in the film as internal and subdued – her character, a young Benares girl and her lover check into a lodge to have some intimacy together.
Unfortunately they get caught and are harassed by the corrupt police. Ever the outspoken lass, Richa declares that she identified with the character, who isn’t ashamed by her feelings but by the situation that follows. Like her onscreen self, she would probably wage war against the monstrous system as well, she says.
Richa is looking to do roles that she enjoys performing in as well as watching herself in. She accepts that sometimes she does do roles for the money but it’s mostly done for love. While she is trying to steer clear of being typecast as the foul-mouthed Punjabi woman, she’s aiming to be as versatile as she can be.
This means she is not sure about which kind of cinema she represents… but she is convinced that she wants to be a part of the change that is sweeping over Hindi cinema. With the recent MASAAN which has picked up two prestigious awards at Cannes and upcoming films such as Sudhir Mishra’s AUR DEVDAS, JIA AUR JIA and MAIN AUR CHARLES, Richa certainly is part of that change already!
