Remembering Yash Chopra – the “King of Romance” on his birth anniversary

Yash Chopra was also known as the “King of Romance” in Bollywood for the countless films he produced/ directed in the romance genre. Yashji – the man who taught us the meaning of romance and unconditional love had a career spanned over a five decades in the Hindi Film industry.

Although he is no more, today on his 84th birthday we would like to relive some of his magic created over the years.


Yashji was born on 27th September 1932 in Lahore. He started his career as an assistant director under I. S. Johar and elder brother B. R. Chopra. He made his first directorial debut with ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ in 1959 and next in 1961- ‘Dharmputra’.

In 1973, he directed his first movie ‘Daag: A poem of love’ after that he directed and produced most lovable and unforgettable movies like ‘Kabhie Kabhie’-1976, ‘Silsila’- 1981, ‘Chandni’- 1989, ‘Lamhe’- 1991, ‘Darr’- 1993, ‘DDLJ’- 1997, ‘Mohabbatein’- 2000, ‘Sathiya’- 2002, ‘Veer-Zaara’- 2004 and ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’- in 2012.

He is also known for musical romances, he gives unforgettable songs to bollywood like ‘Kabhi Kabhie mere dil mein’ from ‘Silsila’, ‘Chandni O meri chandni’ from ‘Chandni’, ‘Jaadu teri najar’ from ‘Darr’, ‘Yeh lamhe yeh pal’.. from ‘Lamhe’ and many more.

Yashji won the National Film Awards six times for his films Dharmputra, Chandni , Darr, DDLJ, Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer Zaara.

Yash Chopra died at the age of 80 on October 21, 2012 during the production of his last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

In the following years, the legendary filmmaker was honoured for his contribution to the industry, with a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – duly accepted by his wife – Pamela Chopra from the hands of Madhuri Dixit.

Also in 2013, Pamela Chopra organised a event as a tribute to Yashji on his 81st birth anniversary well supported by Bollywood. The star-studded event so as many as nine top actresses – Rekha, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma and Parineeti Chopra share stage along with the on-screen “King of Romance” – Shah Rukh Khan.
