Prince Charming – Fawad Khan!

Some girls think he is silent and brooding; others, that he is the dreamy sort, but everyone agrees that Fawad ‘KHUBSOORAT’ Khan, is all things romance, writes Shubarna Mukerji Shu.

He claims he wants to do a variety of cinema, but is still not ready for a DABANGG or SINGHAM yet. He wants to grow further, but doesn’t want to give up on his television… He is Fawad Khan who was seen romancing a very quirky Sonam Kapoor in KHUBSOORAT and has been steadily stealing hearts through the small screen too with his series ‘Zindagi Gulzar Hai’! Clearly, here’s a guy who knows his way around the opposite sex but is he sharing the mantra? No! Fawad would gladly have us believe he is that quiet reticent person he played in the film, saying he doesn’t really understand the need to go on talking about himself! Apparently the actor has managed to bulldoze his PR back home by not allowing them to schedule interviews, even if in India the man is still politely acquiescing. After all, it is not every day one wakes up to find themselves being a part of one of the biggest film industries of the world…

“It’s safe to say that with 100 years of experience behind it the Indian film industry is an institution with consistency, age and experience. Furthermore with a volume crossing a staggering 1500 films a year on average, it is by far the largest in the world. The Pakistani film industry, or more particularly Urdu cinema, suffered a serious blow back in the day. Eventually there were no films being made except the odd one or two every year or so.” The dearth certainly seems to have caused the influx of actors from across the border to our ever growing industry, the names just keep adding these days but Fawad loyally added, “Finance and technical aspects are the major difference between the two industries. But I feel the Pakistani film industry has learnt to run before it can crawl. This second revival of cinema has been amazing as far as quality and versatility is concerned. Who knows, we may well catch up in two years or even sooner!”

And yet, with the kind of applause his work has garnered here, it can be easily said that he will be enjoying the best of both worlds, across borders and industries… But the actor doesn’t feel the need to restrict himself at all. Explaining his stance he said, “I was offered a film which I found interesting. I wanted to experience the feel of working outside my comfort zone of familiar faces for once. Working with new people in new places liberates and educates you in many ways. I’d like to work in many other industries given the right kind of opportunity.” Given the way the female populace has showered their love on him unabashedly, there is good reason he might see success everywhere he goes. Though he claims his wife, Sadaf isn’t the least bit jealous, wonder what she has to say about all the adulation that follows him…

“I don’t think it would have been possible without them (his fans). It is a fact that I don’t know what makes me tick with them, really. I am not being modest, all the ‘adulation’ as you put it has been frankly overwhelming and at times, I would say it is intimidating. Women back home and even here have been equally kind in extending their love and appreciation. All I say or can say, is a big shout out for all the lovely ladies who have given me the confidence and encouragement to come this far. It is this that keeps you going, keeps telling you that you are on the right track.”

When asked about his fans in both Pakistan and India, with a lazy smile, Fawad insisted on sticking to the safest answer anyone could contrive… “Fans in both India and Pakistan have been extremely supportive and expressive in many ways and I would not want to label anything as a crazy experience.  Whatever form of appreciation I have received so far has been truly humbling for me.” When we adamantly refused to buy the answer, he only smiled to say, “Given Pakistan is home, I would say that the love from fans there is a little more dominant. Of course, I would hope that some of it rubs off onto people here, but that only time will tell!”

Meanwhile, Fawad has already signed another film with Sonam Kapoor for which he plans to shift to Bollywood for good. We are ready to wait for him to work that out, till then we will make do with good ol’ television and of course, Rhea Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor to finish with BATTLE FOR BITTORA. And there’s also Akshat Varma’s directorial debut starring the yummy Fawad Khan… so that the ogle fest can be commenced.
