No regrets: Ranbir Kapoor

Controversy’s favourite child opens up on his recent box office debacle, plans of being a producer and earning big monies

No regrets: Ranbir Kapoor

Actor Ranbir Kapoor has learnt to take failures and success in his stride. The latest debacle of ‘Besharam’ after the thumping success of ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ saw the young actor taking a vacation to get his moorings right. He reveals about his Diwali plans and how he has to learn to make better choices.

Why are you sporting a bearded look??
I am currently growing a beard because I don’t have any work. Plus you must have seen the fate of my last release (‘Besharam’) at the box office. I will only star shooting next month now.
Have you hiked your price after ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’??
I don’t know if I will get the chance to hike my price after my last movie. There have been a lot of rumours of me increasing my fees, but there is no truth to it. It is very embarrassing to speak about it, the economics of business. I think today the actors share the profits and loss of the movie. If a film works then you share the money and if it doesn’t then you share the risk.
What went wrong with ‘Besharam’??
I don’t have any formula, so my films could be a hit or a flop. I just work with my heart for 100 days, putting in a lot of hard work. One needs to take responsibility for the kind of films you make. Our film wasn’t good, my work wasn’t good. Hence in the future I will put in more enthusiasm and hard work.
Do you regret doing the film??
My first film, ‘Saawariya’ was such a big flop. So it just can’t be that that I regret doing any movie. Similarly, I don’t regret doing ‘Besharam’. I got the chance to work with my parents and Abhinav. In fact I feel that whatever I am today is because of my mistakes, my successes and failures. I believe that every film adds something to you and gives a chance to learn. So I don’t regret anything in my life.
What have you learnt from your failures??
I get to learn a lot with each film. You just have to work hard and put in a lot more conviction. Maybe in future I would be able to decide which films to do and which ones not to.
How is it working with Karan Johar as an actor in ‘Bombay Velvet’??
We have just finished 40 percent of shooting. Karan is a very good actor and I was pleasantly surprised. On the first day I was thinking how will I act with him because I have known him so well personally. I will keep smiling all the time. But the fact is that the kind of clarity he brought on the sets, the kind of decisions, hard work he did have really added a lot to the movie.
Are you aware of Vidya Balan’s ‘Bobby Jasoos’ being similar to your film??
I am not working in Vidya Balan’s ‘Bobby Jasoos’. My film’s name is ‘Jagga Jasoos’, and I don’t know anything about the other film. We have already started working on the project and will begin shooting on November 13.
Bollywood’s music legend Manna Dey passed away. He was your grandfather’s (Raj Kapoor) favourite…
Manna Dey has been a huge pillar of the film industry. His contribution has been immense. He has sung a lot of songs for my grandfather and I thank him for all the love and music. He will forever be in our hearts.
Will you continue working after you turn 50??
There are a few actors in the industry who are in their late 40s and 50s and they are doing good. Right now I am 31 years and have a lot time to reach 50. These days there are a lot of medicines and surgeries, so a lot can happen till the time I reach 50. I don’t know how will I look and work then.
Apart from work, how are you going to celebrate Diwali??
I have just returned from vacation, so no another one for me. It is a big time for all families in the country. I will be celebrating with my family and friends.
Sachin Tendulkar is retiring. Your comments on it…
I am a big fan of Sachin. It is usually said that you don’t teach your father how to bat. This saying goes best with Sachin. He is the God of cricket and a jewel of our country. It definitely feels bad that this is his last match. For now I am scheduled to be out of the country for shooting, but am very excited about the match. I will definitely try to go and watch it.
