Mani Ratnam’s Tamil hit ‘O Kaadhal Kanmani’ which had Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen play the two lovers, gets it’s umpteenth remake, this time official (as story credits go to Mani Ratnam).
Here Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) are two young hopefuls from different small towns who move to Mumbai to pursue their dreams. A chance encounter between the two, sparks off a heady, no strings attached live-in romance.
But like in ‘Befikre’ they come apart , only here it’s because of their careers and then the predictable happily ever after becomes a sure shot. This harrowing route to happily ever after, has now been done to death in Hindi cinema and the song and dance of it – in Mani Ratnam’s usual style has also become passé.
To add to the misery there are no sparks of chemistry arising off the two young leads rumoured to have been lovers once. The haunting melody of ‘Ashiqui 2’ is not there either. Rahman has become quite repetitive in his compositions and Director Shaad Ali can do little to lift up the mundane here.
Naseeruddin Shah as Gopi and Leela Samson as Charulata, ageing lovers who rent out a room to the young couple, make for a stinging contrast but their roles don’t allow them full reign. This one is really Not Ok Jaanu!
