So once arch rivals Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit Nene are friends now and their upcoming film ‘Gulab Gang’ directed by Soumik Sen has accomplished this wonder. Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit were the reigning queens of their time in Hindi films and how can there be two queens in the same business and that too friends?
Well, this was the reason that their career graph never overlapped each other’s and we never saw these two sharing screen space ever. But as Indian cinema is taking a leap, so are issues like age old rivalry and friendships. Whoever thought that there would be a time when a film would be made on an issue like equality of women and there would be female leads as an antagonist and a protagonist in it?
‘Gulab Gang’ has Madhuri Dixit- the hero and Juhi Chawla- the villain in a never-before treat for us. Madhuri is all gung-ho about it… “I never thought of her as my competitor,” she declares.
“I never had any qualms about working with anyone. This is my thinking that we are actors not horses running towards one finish line. It is a creative field and we like certain roles and work with people we like. It is not that I have not worked in two-heroine projects earlier. I worked with Preity Zinta (‘Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke’), Aishwarya Rai (‘Devdas’) and Karisma Kapoor (‘Dil To Pagal Hai’). It is wonderful that we did a film together finally. She is a good actress. It is inspiring to see another good actress work with you. I think our scenes are very tight and I would definitely love to work with her again.”
Talking about what her character has to offer in the film, she added, “It is a strong role. When Soumik brought the story to me, I thought it was entertaining, massy and yet it had a lovely message. Rajjo is a vigilante and believes in education of women. She believes women should be given the tools to be independent. My character believes that the rod is god. She has her goals straight. And then there is Juhi, who is playing this negative, mean and power-hungry politician. I feel it could have been two men but they happen to be two women,” said Dixit. …Which makes the clash even more fiery, we think!
