Darshan Kumar talks to Shubarna Mukerji Shu about his experiences playing the spouse of MARY KOM!
All who have seen the trailers of ‘Mary Kom’ have been impressed. While Priyanka Chopra’s brilliance shines through, all girls are curious to know about the man who plays her husband.
For a first time actor how does it feel to be a part of ‘Mary Kom’?
“I am not sure I know how exactly I am feeling at this moment. I was excited and at the same time a little nervous and of course, anxious. Somewhere in all this I just want to be numb and let it all just get over with because I don’t know if my nerves can take any more of this! Thankfully, it is only now that I have some time to think about it, as my schedule for NH10 got over. If I had more time at hand I don’t know what I would have done!”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Priyanka Chopra… a very talked about film, you have already done the best for yourself!
Thank you for saying that, though it is not when we will be judged! Of course, the high is there, but what was amazing is how helpful everyone is around here. I have been very closely associated with Naseeruddin Shah, I have worked with him extensively, for me he is Hindi cinema but I am glad that as the doors open, I am still coming back charmed and very happy each day with a job well done.
Which was the most difficult scene?
There were some, but I guess I cannot really say this one in particular was the one. I guess, it was because I had very excellent support all through. Priyanka Chopra I have to mention because she was so good to me, really she never made me feel like I am a newcomer and yet, she made that effort to make me feel comfortable. It is not something everyone would have done. And yet she was there, with me all through. Most of my work is with her, so there. But not just her, even Omung Sir was very nice to me. They actually simplified the whole process for me, explained everything over so clearly that I guess there was really no problem at all with any scene.
What do you have to say about yourself, as an actor, as someone who is taking that first step to make a mark for himself?
Well, I have tried my level best to make that first step an impressionable one, I really think I am very fortunate to be guided well from the very beginning. To have someone like Naseer Bhai, supporting you – what more could anyone want? I have grown up seeing his films, I have his aashirwad with me and for me that is like the hand of God.
With Naseer Bhai, clearly, you have a wonderful mentor but no mentor can prepare you for the onslaught for female fans.
I don’t know about that. What can I say?
Well, are you prepared?
What is there to be prepared? Do I have to be prepared? I really don’t know all these things. I am really nervous about the film, I have never really thought about anything else.
But girls will happen, you know that right?
I don’t know…
Why are you blushing, for everyone who has wanted to be an actor, somewhere in the subconscious there is this need to have fans right?
Of course I want people to like my work and me, but I don’t know if I am prepared to have girls coming onto me and stuff. I frankly don’t know what it is to have something like that, so I don’t know what to say!
So what is the one thing you are looking forward to?
Well, as you know I have two films to make people stand up and see my potential and an actor, I really hope I don’t disappoint my audience nor do I want to disappoint my mentor and everyone else who has put faith in me. I am not someone who was born in this industry. I don’t know how things will be, I know I want to act and I know I want to do a good job at it, I am trying and I can just hope it takes shape.
