The handsome hunk from Pakistan won hearts with his performance in KAPOOR AND SONS and looking at his fan following, he is here to stay for long. In an exclusive chat with HI BLITZ, he talks about his dark side and his shyness for the camera.
When asked about his dark side, Fawad says, “You don’t want to go into that space,” he laughs. “It’s like THE CELL (the American psychological film that delves into the mind of a serial killer), that’s what the inside of my mind is like.” And if there’s anything wicked about him, it’s his sense of humor. “I used to have a morbid and morose sense of humor. And people don’t generally get it-they’ll say ‘god forbid, god forbid’…not realizing I’m joking,” says Fawad. “I try and keep that side more to myself now, though you will see it sometimes in the roles I play.”
Born in Karachi, Fawad has been a sensation in Pakistan since he acted in TV serials like Dastaan, Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hai- many of which are even watched here. The Bollywood-going public at large got introduced to him in Khoobsurat, but it was really Kapoor& Sons that’s added a strong acting cred to his portfolio. A muscular yet subtle performance as a gay man, something rarely seen in Hindi films which are replete with camp caricatures. “Whenever I face the camera, I always ask the director if I’m overdoing it. I always feel I’m very capable of that, even though they say no.
So I feel I can overact sometimes and I’m very conscious of that,” Fawad goes on to explain. “I try to keep it as subtle as possible I feel less is more and I think people have forgotten the meaning of that in films. Subtlety has died and what subtlety does is that you leave certain things open to the audience. It’s alright if they get offended or don’t get it all. It’s like an artwork, open to interpretation. It’s more interesting that way.”
