Esha Deol who retired into matrimonial bliss a few years ago gets a comeback of sorts with this journalist-turned-director/writer Ram Kamal Mukherjee’s debut short film effort.
The narrative encapsulates a woman’s ambition and how having earned it (by walking away from a mundane marriage) – she may or may not have achieved the satisfaction she desired. That’s the irony I saw in pastry chef Shilpa Sen’s(Esha) whimsical half-smile when she gets a call from her ex-husband( played by Tarun Malhotra), now a CEO of a major airline, congratulating her for having made the pastry of his dreams – in celebration of the first anniversary of his second marriage, at the 5 star hotel she, his ex-wife is employed in. Other than that one defining moment, Esha Deol is rather wishy-washy in her role. The character’s motivation doesn’t come through strongly enough and her reasons for walking out of the marriage don’t seem valid enough.
What comes before that is routine hotel kitchen stuff with brief reminisces from the past filtering through. It’s not exactly gripping but there’s a certain poignancy that comes through and that’s what Ram Kamal Mukherjee should be commended for. The camerawork is reminiscent of a big screen glossy and the narrative is prone to mush around rather than be crisp and telling.
