Washington D.C.: American singer-songwriter Britney Spear’s smash hits will soon have their own musical. Theater owner James L Nederlander announced that the sensational pop star’s songs will be featured in “Once Upon A One More Time’s, a musical comedy featuring 23 tracks from the singer’s catalog, reported Variety.
The show’s premiere will be held in fall at Broadway in Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre before heading to Broadway. Although the musical features a long list of the singer’s hits but the play isn’t actually about the singer. Instead, it revolves around a humorous take on several classic Disney characters. The hilarious play will give focus on some of the most well-known princesses.
According to the New York Times as cited by E! News, the audience can expect to witness the magic of some famous characters like Rapunzel, Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty discussing Grimm’s Fairy Tales at a book club. Their lives are turned upside down after receiving a copy of Betty Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique” all with the help of their fairy godmother.
The book writer for “Once Upon a One More Time”, Jon Hartmere, explained, “Cinderella is having an existential crisis, and she has a posse of famous princesses, and her stepmother is the main antagonist, and there’s also Prince Charming and a dwarf we’ve never met ?” the eighth dwarf ?” and a narrator who is unhappy his system is being dismantled before his eyes.”
Hartmere added that the main characters in the play will “get deeper into modern ideas” like “second and third-wave feminism” as well as storytelling and social norms. “It’s also super fun and funny,” he told the Times.
The musical will be produced by the theatre’s owner James L. Nederlander, directed by Kristin Hanggi and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid. Hartmere also shared that the show has had various readings, one of which was attended by Spears as well. The singer is on a work hiatus due to father’s recent health issues. The pop sensation also cancelled her Las Vegas residency “Domination” due to her father’s health.
“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs- especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore. This is a dream come true for me, “Spears said in a statement.
Those eagerly waiting to see the play will have to wait a few more months. The previews begins on October 29. It will officially open on November 13 and will end on December 1. The show will head to Broadway after its run in Chicago.
