Mahesh Bhat’s Arth which was a path breaking film for its time is set to hit the big screens again with new faces. While Mumbai Mirror reported Jacqueline Fernandez will essay the role of Smita Patil in the drama, Swara Bhaskar has been chosen to play Shabana Azmi in the film.
Arth, which is a cult classic and one of the most favourite films of Indian critics released in 1982 and was remade in Tamil as Marupadiyum in 1993. However, the Hindi remake was announced decades later in 2017.
The original starred Shabana Azmi, Smita Patel, Raj Kiran and Kulbhushan Kharbanda in lead roles. A source informed a leading entertainment portal that Swara has watched the film and loves it. The actor is also expected to sign soon.
The source has been quoted as saying, "Swara has watched Arth and loves the film. When she was offered the role, she agreed to be a part of the project and will sign on the dotted line shortly. She admires Revathy both as a filmmaker and actor and is excited to work with another female director after Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari in Nil Battey Sannata (2016).”
The source also informed the entertainment publication that "the cast will begin prep and reading session closer to the shooting date."
Swara is known for working in unconventional films like Nil Battey Sannata, Tanu Weds Manu, Veere Di Wedding, and more.
