In a major development in the case wherein drugs were being supplied to late actor Sushant Singh Rajput (SSR), the officials of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have arrested Siddharth Pithani, flat mate of Rajput, the agency officials informed on Friday. After Pithani's arrest, total persons arrested in the case has reached to 35.
According to the Zonal Director of the Mumbai Unit of NCB, Sameer Wankhede, NCB stated in a follow up action in NCB Mumbai CR 16/20, a team of NCB Mumbai arrested one of the absconding accused Siddhartha Pithani at Hyderabad on May 26. Earlier notices u/s 67 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act were served to accused Siddharth Pithani but he did not join the investigation.
"NCB Mumbai gathered intelligence about the whereabouts of the said accused in Hyderabad, Telangana State. Accordingly on May 25, a team from NCB, Mumbai was deputed to Hyderabad in search of the accused who has been long absconding and fleeing from justice. The escort team of NCB, Mumbai was assisted by NCB, Sub Zonal Unit at Hyderabad, the statement claimed," Wankhede said.
Pithani was produced before the court in Hyderabad which granted his transit warrant after which he was brought to Mumbai. He was produced before the court in Mumbai on Friday which remanded Pithani to NCB custody till June 01.
In August last year, NCB had registered an offence against actress Rhea Chakraborty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after Enforcement Directorate (ED) gave them details about Chakraborty's communication with few people wherein they were discussing about drugs such as MDMA, LSD and hash (hashish). The ED had received the alleged information from the deleted WhatsApp data of Chakraborty.
Later the NCB arrested several people including Rhea and her brother Showik among others in connection with the case.
Showik in his statement to the NCB had claimed that only once Rhea's card was used to make the payment of contraband meant for Sushant Singh Rajput and rest all the time payments were made by Rajput’s then house manager Samuel Miranda. Showik also claimed that he never paid or received any money for procuring contraband meant for Rajput.
Pithani was arrested under NDPS Act 1985 sections 8(c) - produce, manufacture, possess, sell, purchase, transport, warehouse, use, consume, import inter-State, export inter-State, import into India, export from India or tranship any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance, except for medical or scientific purposes and in the manner), 20(b)(II)(a) - involves small quantity, with rigorous imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine, which may extend to ten thousand rupees, or with both, 27 - Punishment for consumption of any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance, 27-A - Punishment for financing illicit traffic and harbouring offenders, 28 - Punishment for attempts to commit offences, 29 - Punishment for abetment and criminal conspiracy, 35 - Presumption of culpable mental state
