Journalist calls out Kangana Ranaut for talking about 'equality in B-Town', but 'supporting Hindutva'

With Kangana Ranaut making several claims and allegations regarding her position in Bollywood, Sushant Singh Rajput’s death by suicide, and her digs at actors Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhaskar, a number of people have come out on social media to praise and criticize the National Award-winning, Padma Shri actress for her statements.

One of the critics was senior journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani, who tweeted, “So #KanganaRanaut claims to be a flag bearer of equality in Bollywood but supports the politics of Hindutva that’s primarily based on the principle of inequality- an ideology seeking to establish the hegemony of one religion. Which grade hypocrisy is this? (sic)?”

Sherwani received a lot of criticism for the tweet. BJP leader Gopal Krishna Agarwal tweeted, “(Her) comments on subjects she is ignorant. Every word, text of #Hinduism emphasises on harmony & unity of living beings. What is #Brahman!! Oneness, oneself beyond uniformity only unity even with inert objects. But divisive mind never gets the concept, she breeds agenda (sic).”

Meanwhile, author Aabhas Maldahiyar tweeted, “Hindutva: Savarkar wanted Muslims to stay in India. Islamists: Wanted separate land by hook or crook to suffice Ummah. Even Ambedkar mentions it. Stop spreading rubbish understanding @khanumarfa. Hindutva is not ideology but “state of being Hindu” (sic).

Sherwani also received a lot of praise for her statements. Here are some of the tweets

Now, when it comes to the fact check: If you look back at history, you can see that only part of Maldahiyar’s statement was true. The bit where the Muslim League wanted their own state is something that history books have shared since we have been in school.

However, there are a number of articles arguing that Savarkar was not in favour of Muslims being in India. According to an article published in Mint, Savarkar was in favour of the ‘two-state’ idea long before Mohammad Ali Jinha suggested it.

A book written by American author Tom Treanor, who had interviewed Savarkar at the time, revealed that Savarkar ‘wanted to treat the Muslims like how the Americans ‘treated the Negroes at the time.’

However, while these claims have been argued, another biography on the Hindu Mahasabha leader says that he believed some Muslims and Christians possessed ‘all essential qualifications of Hindutva’.

Earlier, Ranaut opened fire at Bollywood bigwigs during her interaction with Republic TV editor Arnab Goswami.

From claiming actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death a murder not suicide, to calling out filmmakers Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt for enforcing nepotism in the industry, she made a lot of allegations.

She said, “Javed Akhtar called me to his house and said clearly, 'If you don't apologise to Hrithik Roshan, you will have to commit suicide. They will put you in jail, they have found evidence.' I asked him, 'What evidence? What have I done?'. To this, Javed Akhtar said, "Tere mooh kaala ho jaayega, tu jaayegi kaha?" Javed Akhtar has enough political connections to get away with pretty much anything in Mumbai. And, Mahesh Bhatt is his best friend.
