Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui shares his thoughts about women in Bollywood and making it big in the industry with SHUBARNA MUKERJI SHU

I think beautiful women are sometimes the most insecure people, because they know it doesn’t last forever, they are forever competing with others to see who is the ‘fairest of them all’… That’s the reason why they so readily buy into things like ‘short career spans’! I have seen desperation amongst 20 year-old girls thinking if they don’t get a film in the next year their career is finished. Who said you cannot have a successful career if you debut at 30? Who has made these rules? Each and every one has it in them to break the rules and make their own way to stardom, but if you are going to fret over pimples and dresses ALONE, how will you manage to make your own path?

You see, all path-breaking roles can come if you are willing to be different from rest. The herd mentality is not something that is specific to girls, even men over here are suffering the same fate because they are not thinking for themselves, they are blindly following the ‘trends’ as they call it. What is the sense in it? Who are the people that are usually remembered? Those who do things differently. What are the films that are remembered? Those which come and completely take you by surprise… If posterity is what you want, then you should have these things clear in your mind.

So many times we are asked how it feels to be directed by a woman director, I have worked with quite a few and I have noticed one thing, if they know their film, if they know what they want, if they know the technicalities, they are going to be respected. If they don’t know what they are doing on the sets they will be treated without respect. And believe me, the same applies for male directors.

If you don’t know what you are about, people who are literally born on the sets of the film industry such as your spots and other technicians will be the first to sense your ‘illiteracy’ and ignore directives. Knowledge, talent, craft these are things to hone, these are things which will grow with you as you age without any supplements, with just experience. Else films like ‘Mother India’, ‘English Vinglish’ and others would not have been made, would not have been the successes they were at the box office.

So did you ask me who my all-time favourite actress was? Well, it will have to be the one and the only, Kimi Katkar! I will never in my life forget, ‘Tarzaaan….’
