Movie lovers in Mumbai and across the country are in for a bonanza thanks to Shorts TV, the world’s only TV channel dedicated to short movies. The 2019 Oscar Nominated Short Films are being released in Indian cinemas ahead of the Oscar ceremony on February 24.

Globally, this marks the 14th consecutive year of the Oscar Nominated Short Films theatrical experience. They are being screened in India for the first time.

Showcasing talent and diversity of subjects, the films vying for the award include the following:

Live Action – Madre, Fauve, Marguerite, Detainment, Skin and Period. End of Sentence.

ANIMATION: Bao, Late Afternoon, Animal Behaviour, Weekends and One Small Step.

The live action nominees tackle hard-hitting subjects that are making headlines around the world, while the animated shorts are inspirational as well as hilarious. Indians will be delighted the Live Action segment includes the American funded documentary about menstrual hygiene, ‘Period. End of Sentence’, which was filmed in India. Sundance Film Festival had around 12,000 shorts. At the Oscars, 140 live-action and 80 animated shorts were deemed eligible, out of which the Academy created a shortlist which will be for the top honour.

“Short movies continue to be one of the most interesting and surprising filmmaking categories recognised by the Oscars every year,” said Carter Pilcher, CEO, ShortsTV, which is showcasing the Live Action and Animation short film nominees’ compilation as two separate theatrical releases in Indian cinemas. Couch potatoes can watch the films on Tatasky. The nominated films have been produced and or filmed in such countries as Ireland, Canada, China, Spain, the United States and as stated above, India. Interestingly, there are five women directors nominated in this year’s short film category. And several films focus on Asia or have been made by filmmakers of Asian descent.

In 2018, the Oscar Nominated Short Films earned over $3.5 million in worldwide box office gross, double the level from just two years prior. The 2019 release is the largest theatrical release of short films, with screenings in more than 600 screens across the USA, Canada, Europe, Latin America, South Africa, Australia and India before the Academy Awards ceremony on 24 February 2019. The shorts have already achieved the best ever opening weekend box office in the US.
