Like in our films and film music all along, today’s Hindi cinema is also about young blood with music in their very genes. And this intrepid generation seems to have imbibed the chromosomes and mixed them with their own thing to forge the path of success, keeping, of course, trends in mind.

Alyssa Mendonsa (daughter of Loy of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)
She is now learning the piano, but is a natural singer and composer. Alyssa made a mark with ‘Uff Teri Ada‘ from Karthik Calling Karthik and has so far sung only for S-E-L. Her ‘Khwabon Ke Parinde‘ from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was also popular, as was ‘Papa Jag Jayega‘ from Housefull.

Amaal Mallik (son of Daboo Malik)
The elder son of composer Daboo Malik (son of veteran composer Sardar Malik and brother of Anu Malik), is no less than a sensation after Salman Khan gave him his first break in Jai Ho! (2014). 2015 belonged to Amaal as the composer of the year’s biggest song ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai Yaaron’, multiple singles for T-Series including ‘Zindagi Aa Raha Hoon Main‘ and ‘Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon‘ and hit songs in Ek Paheli-Leela, Hero, Airlift and others.

Anmol Malik (daughter of Anu Malik)
After a film or two as a child singer in the ’90s, Anmol first made a mark in the last decade with her songs from Umrao Jaan and Ugly Aur Pagli. Formally trained by her grandfather Sardar Malik and then with the Trinity College of Music, Anmol is as brilliant at Hindi (like her single ‘Lamhein‘ for Mohit Suri) as at English (‘Old-School Girl’ from Tanu Weds Manu Returns).

Armaan Malik (son of Daboo Malik)
The younger brother of Amaal Mallik is a child prodigy of sorts and has now made an initial mark as a playback singer. As a kid he has sung in multiple films and for over 200 commercials, and has even dubbed for a British boy in My Name Is Khan. He is learning Hindustani classical music and has got a scholarship from the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Armaan has just sung for Hero, Hate Story 3 and the Emraan Hashmi single ‘Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon‘.

Divya Kumar (grandson of composer Pandit Shivram)
Divya Kumar’s father, Bhagwan Shivram, also was an eminent musician for over 30 years, and many of his uncles and aunts were also involved in film music. The youngest of generations of singers groomed by Kalyanji-Anandji-a list that begins with Manhar Udhas and Anuradha Paudwal, Divya Kumar is typecast in loud, boisterous songs, and his true breakthrough was with ‘Maston Ki Jhund‘ from Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

A regular with Amit Trivedi and Sachin-Jigar among others, Divya has excelled in Bahubali-The Beginning‘s ‘Manohari‘, showcasing what he can do in the lower octaves as well.

Mithoon (son of Naresh Sharma)
His father is a composer, arranger-programmer and was the right-hand of Nadeem-Shravan at their peak, besides being the legendary Pyarelal’s brother and the son of Pandit Ramprasad Sharma, film musician and the man who has trained so many composers including Jatin-Lalit, Anu Malik and others.

Mithoon has just bagged his first solo film as composer, Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, and has been lyricist and singer as well. His most famous works include ‘Phir Mohabbat‘ (Murder 2), ‘Tum Hi Ho‘ (Aashiqui 2) and ‘Baarish‘ (Yaariyan) after hit songs in the last decade fromAnwar and Bas Ek Pal and re-creations in Zeher and Kalyug.

Monali Thakur (daughter of Shakti Thakur)
She is the daughter of famed Bengali musician Shakti Thakur (who had sung in a couple of ’80s Hindi films). Beginning with the multi-singer ‘Kubool Kar Le‘ from Jaan-E-Manncomposed by Anu Malik, who was one of the judges on Indian Idol from where she made her entry into Hindi cinema, Monali has also sung hits like ‘Zara Zara Touch Me‘ (Race) and ‘Sawaar Loon‘ (Lootera). She has also acted in a Bengali serial and later the Nagesh Kukunoor film Lakshmi in a pivotal role. She considers Anu Malik’s ‘Moh Moh Ke Dhaage‘ (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) as her finest song to date.

Shweta Pandit (daughter of Mandhir Pandit)
The niece of Jatin-Lalit and daughter of their elder brother Mandhir (who had formed the short-lived Mandhir-Jatin duo in the ’80s), Shweta sang first in Mohabbatein and has sung for several major composers since. ‘Chhore Ki Baatein‘ (Fight Club) was her true breakthrough. Of late, she also acts in a few films while continuing her singing career (Zanjeer, Highway, Guddu Ki Gun). Shweta’s bloodline extends to her grandfather, Pandit Pratap Narayan and her grand-uncle, Pandit Jasraj.

Siddharth Mahadevan (son of Shankar Mahadevan)
Already much awarded, this trained singer has even composed music for Marathi films. In Hindi, his most famous songs include ‘Zinda‘ (Bhaag Milkha Bhaag), ‘Malang‘ (Dhoom 3) and ‘Bol Beliya‘ (Kill/Dil).

Sohail Sen (son of composer Sameer Sen)
The music lineage extends much above, to his grandfather Shambhu Sen and great-grandfather Jamal Sen. Sohail Sen was introduced by Ashutosh Gowariker as a solo composer in What’s Your Raashee? and has since scored hit tracks in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Gunday.
