Goa: While the Goa government is fast tracking the completion of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus at Cuncolim in South Goa, it has also identified 7.50 lakh square metres of land in Sanguem constituency of South Goa for setting up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).

Goa is also to start a National Forensic Science University, the campus of which would come up in Dharbandora, twelfth taluka of the state. The university has already started operating from a temporary campus at Ponda in South Goa.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that he wants to make Goa the knowledge and technology hub of the country. He has also made a budgetary allocation to implement the National Education Policy 2020.

Pramod Sawant, the chief minister, has stated that he intends to turn Goa into the nation's centre for science and technology. Additionally, he has set aside money in his budget to carry out the National Education Policy 2020.

Sawant claimed that slums were mushrooming on government land, which had been encroached upon. Under the Public Private Partnership paradigm, this land can be used to make Goa the educational and innovation hub.

The government has expressed its willingness to give educational institutions land. Goa has a presence in medical colleges in addition to engineering colleges like the Goa Engineering College, NIT, IIT, and others.

Sawant had a rare opportunity to commend the colonisers for establishing the first medical college in Asia in Goa in 1847, despite the ongoing condemnation of the Portuguese for enforcing forced religious conversions in Goa.

"No doubt the Portuguese committed atrocities, but we should mention that they constructed Goa Medical College in 1847, which was the first in Asia," Sawant said.

The AYUSH government will soon open an AYUSH hospital in Goa, providing opportunities for students to learn Ayurveda. Around 500 students will be able to study undergraduate, graduate, and PhD degrees thanks to the 250-bed facility.

While offering space for such massive educational projects, the government, however, also encountered protests. People at Shel-Melauli in the Sattari taluka of North Goa protested when land for the IIT project was found there because they believed it would harm the ecology.

It was abandoned in response to public pressure, and now Sanguem has been chosen as the location for the IIT.

"We will take care that no destruction of the environment takes place here," Social Welfare Minister and Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Desai said.

In a statement to the media, Phal Desai noted that the area has a few encroachments but that the land is government property. He will, nonetheless, converse with the trespassers and make other efforts to help them recover.

"We will see that such things do not happen here and this project is not objected to. I will take all into confidence, before going ahead with this project," Phal Desai said.

While applauding initiatives like the NIT and IIT in the coastal state, Phal Desai pointed out that in addition to guaranteeing local students employment, the government also needs to make sure that seats are reserved for them.
