As COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra are on the decline, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope has said that schools for classes 1 to 4 may reopen soon.

According to reports from ABP, a decision in this regard will be taken at the state cabinet meeting tomorrow, the report added that the public health department made no objection to the reopening.

Recently over 2,000 parents in Mumbai got together and signed an online petition to urge the government to start offline schools for their children in primary classes. The letter was addressed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The parents in the letter said that some of their children have never seen physical schools and only have a concept of it from their online studies. They add that the absence of physical schools is bound to affect the overall growth of their children and urged the CM to start physical schools at the earliest.

Their letter also included suggestions on how parent bodies and schools collaborate and create SOP's (Standard operating procedures) for reopening the offline schools. The letter also assured that BMC and the government won't be responsible if any child gets COVID-19.

Schools for classes 8-12 were reopened from October 4.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 766 new COVID-19 infections and 19 fresh fatalities on Tuesday even as the active cases in the state remained below 10,000 for the third consecutive day, the health department said.

With addition of new infections and fatalities, the statewide caseload increased to 66,31,297 and the toll to 1,40,766, the department said in a bulletin.

The state had reported eight fresh fatalities and 656 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, lowest one-day figures since April 2020.

The health department said 929 patients were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours.

With this, the number of recovered cases rose to 64,77,379
