I am really good at art, and I have also taken the talent exams like elementary and intermediate. My parents are very supportive, and have encouraged me to continue my passion even while I prepare for my board exams. The drawback is that currently I do not have a computer at home, and even though my father might be able to get me one soon, I am not sure I want to use that medium to become an artist. Will it be possible for me to get work if I do not use a computer? – Vandana Sharma

Dear Vandana,

I get asked this question often, because artists often visualise their medium as the paper and colours or the canvass. I would say that to build your skills and be up to date in this world, you should learn how to operate the art software modules on the computer, even if you do not intend to work in it. It will show you the contrasts and the possibilities and the drawbacks. Also, as I said, it will keep you updated on stuff. That does not mean that you pressurise your family to get a computer right away. You have some time, and so you can wait until they can actually get one for you.

As far as looking for work goes, the fields are different and the needs and necessities from each medium are different. Thus, even though it may not be difficult to find work in the traditional medium, the digital world will have more opportunities.

I am in TYBCom. I have been working to build my knowledge in the field of finance, but I recently head of knowledge process outsourcing. I read up on what it means, but I am not sure whether they have any openings for fresh graduates. I know that I have great communication skills, but I am not aware of what the industry expects, and how to go about looking for a job. Is it possible to land one? -Dhwani Merchant

Dear Dhwani,

In every job profile, the hiring organisation looks for candidates will skills and expertise, so if you have it, why won’t you get a break? Everyone needs to be patient, and it is only a matter of time before you will be matched with a work profile you like. Yes, you have to keep looking and network, and look out for opportunities, wherever you hear of any. As far as getting a break, you have to be on top of things.

Look for fresh opportunities in different companies by regularly scanning their websites. Create your profile on the popular job hunt portals on the internet, looking for the kind of work you want. Keep applying until you get some interview calls. In terms of salary, the industry has some good prospects. Even those who are working at entry level are able to take home attractive salary packages. As you reach higher positions, salary and other perks will also increase.

I have an idea that after I graduate, I want to build a career in fitness. I am already reading up on nutrition and fitness, but my parents are not fully on board with the idea now, since I come from a family of businessmen who want me to join the family business even while I am in college. I want to opt for formal training in the field of fitness. I am trying to learn from another consultant by accompanying him on his client visits and observing. – Karan Shroff

Dear Karan,

Yes, there is a professional qualification possible in this field. After graduation, you can join a diploma course in fitness. There are many on offer in the city by private institutes and fitness centres. Your commitment is evident from the fact that you are already trying to learn from those in the field. You should talk to your parents and tell them what you want to do, but go with a plan rather than just talking in thin air. Logically explain to them the chronology in which you will approach your future training and plans and tell them about the fact that you are learning from the professional. Also, show them the possibility of the earning that is possible in the field after you put in two or three years of work. Once your parents know that you are looking at a good income in future, they will pressure you less. If possible do take your parents to a local gym one of these days to check out how hard the fitness trainers and managers work. Perhaps it will help them to understand that you are signing up for something really challenging. Also keep in mind that in this field, the most important aspect is your keenness towards making a genuine difference in another person’s life through consistent work towards the body and its health.

I have several responsibilities at home, and I am finding it extremely difficult to concentrate on my work as well as attend college. I don’t think I can complete my graduation from college, but I want to look up a professional course in office administration to help me in better prospects. I want to become a personal assistant or secretary, but my knowledge of English language is not up to the mark. What should I do? – Reena Kamble

Dear Reena,

I feel that you have perhaps taken an appropriate decision keeping your duties in mind. My first piece of advice to you is that even if you land a job, please finish your graduation via distance education. Although it might seem quite unnecessary in the short run, you will find it extremely helpful in future when you are looking to advance in your career.

As far as your concern for the English language skills go, I advise you to hone them immediately. Anyway, you will be able to take up a good administrative course only after your HSC, so you have at least a year and a half to improve your English. Join a course or try and learn online. The best way would be to read a newspaper every day, and read magazines whenever you have the time. Look up the difficult words in the dictionary and try and remember how to use them. If you have the willingness, you will succeed.

I am studying mass media right now, but the more I think of it, the more I realise that I want to work in broadcast media, not in print media. I realise that I am extremely interested in radio broadcasting, and also want to learn about production. I want to pursue a professional course in radio programming. My issue is that I do not write well enough for radio. I often write long-winded sentences which are not appealing. It is difficult for me to think in terms of snazzy short sentences. What should I do about it? – Teena Mandar

Dear Teena,

I am happy that you at least understand the importance of writing in this field. Since there is no visual, and it is only an audio medium, the script is an important element of radio broadcasting. A good script is the heart of radio programming and broadcast. In fact, there are special scriptwriters in the radio field as well. That said, it may not be necessary that you have to write all the time. Even then, most programmes are scripted on the radio (even the ones that seem to be done on the spot and interactive). So, while you can depend on script writers to help, you still need to improve on your writing. It is the charm of the written word that needs to bind the listener to the station and connect the audience to it. And there is no point in giving up the idea of making a profession in this field simply because you feel you do not write well. Good writing skills will prove to be an asset where ever you work and whatever you do.
