On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, Higher Education Forum felicitates those who have worked diligently to bring about a revolution in their own unique way.
‘A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.’ This thought came alive at the Higher Education Forum’s (HEF) seventh annual Teachers’ Day award ceremony held at the Indian Scholl of Design & Innovation (ISDI), Lower Parel on September 3rd. On the occasion, HEF felicitated 20 educators and contributors to the field of higher education (details below) from various fields.
The event was presided over by Dr. A. K. Sen Gupta, Founder and Convener, HEF. The hosts for the evening HEF founding members Prof. Parag Amin and Dr. Lakshmi Mohan regaled the audience in an engaging manner with witty anecdotes and stories. Educationists like Dr. N. M. Kondap, Director General, Rajasthani Sammelan Group; management educator Prof. Sharu Rangnekar; Prof. Hema Santhanam, former Director – Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies; Nirmala Mahendale, President – BMA; Dr. G. S. Singh, Founder Trustee of HEF; Dr. M. Shirhatti, Advisor-JJTU; and Prof. Peter Cunningham, Professor Emeritus, Nelson Mandela University, South Africa were present on the occasion.
After the traditional lighting of the lamp, Dr. Mookesh Patel, Dean – ISDI, delivered the welcome address, saying, “It is the teachers who build our tomorrow, who build the greatest institutes.” Dr. Cunningham mentioned that the teachers should feel proud that they are not only celebrating themselves but the countless lives they have touched. He spoke of three parameters observed by teachers – self giving, self development and self awareness. He left the audience with some food for thought when he said, “We need to address the decline of morality and ethical consideration. To what extent we uphold our spiritual values that we want to pass on to our students.”
Dr. A. K. Sen Gupta, in his address talked of the lack of respect as well as remuneration for teachers, and stated the underlying principal behind the awards: “The thrust of these awards is that teachers need to be self motivated, even when the system is not conducive to it. Despite the hurdles, the teachers have to create an education revolution with their passion.”
On the occasion, HEF also felicitated a five core committee members for their outstanding contribution to the forum. These include Harish Aiyer – Honorary Secretary, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Navi Mumbai; Prof. Anup Palsokar – Member of Faculty, SIES College of Management Studies (SIESCOMS); Prof. Vilas Chaudhury – Member of Faculty, SIESCOMS; Prof. Sona Raman – Programme Director, ISDI and Dr. Chitra Ramanan – Member of Faculty, SIESCOMS.
