On this day, March 7, in the year 1987, Sunil Gavaskar became the first cricketer to reach milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Gavaskar reached the five digit score in Test career in a match against Pakistan, played at Ahmadabad. Gavaskar reached the milestone on the third day of the match. He needed 58 more runs to reach the milestone and he played brilliantly to reach his target.

This was Gavaskar’s 122th innings in his 124th Test match. Gavaskar, who was well aware of his achievement, ran with raising his bat as he took the final run of the feat. Gavakar made 63 runs in the match, which ended in a tie.

Post Gavaskar’s achievement, the crowd’s response was so wild that match had to be stopped for about 20 minutes. Eye-witnesses of the match recall that people started shouting and some even invaded the pitch to congratulate the Indian legend for his achievement.

Unfortunately, the video tapes of the match were misplaced by Doordarshan, which was the sole broadcaster of the match. However, the memories of the match still remains in the minds of crowd as well as Gavaskar himself.
