Controversy erupted in IPL 2019 after Ravichandhan Ashwin mankad-ed Jos Buttler during the match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. KXIP skipper Ashwin dismissed Buttler by mankading him run-out, just when the English cricketer was batting superbly scoring 69 off 43 balls. Although this was first such incident in IPL, this was not the first time that the Indian spinner has attempted this type of dismissal.
Way back in February 2012, Ashwin attempted mankading to dismiss Sri Lankan player Lahiru Thirimanne during the tri-angular CB series between India, Sri Lanka and Australia. In the 8 match between India and Sri Lanka on February 21, 2012, Ashwin manked-ed Thirimanne while attempting to bowl third ball of the 40th over. Ashwin appealed for out to umpire after removing the bails as Thirimanne remained out of the crease. Have a look at the video below.
At that time, however, Thirimanne remained non-out as Indian skipper Virender Sehwag withdrew the appeal keeping the spirit of the game. During the discussion with umpires, Sehwag withdrew the appeal along with giving a warning to Thirimanne. Later, Sehwag also revealed the Ashwin had already given a warning to Thirimanne before dismissing him.
The match was won by Sri Lanka by 51 runs after India could not chase down the 290-run target in the 2nd innings. India also accounted for poor performance in the series and it was Sri Lanka and Australia who went to finals, where the latter clinched victory by winning two final matches out of three.
