England, who entered the World Cup with the favourite tag, displayed a doughty performance and registered a 104-run victory over South Africa at The Oval. Chasing target of 312 runs, South Africa got off to a very decent start but in the fourth over Hashim Amla went back to the pavilion after getting hit by a nasty bouncer. A highlight of the match was South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who scripted his name in the history books as he became the first spinner to bowl the first ball of a World Cup.
After electing to bowl, South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis surprised everyone by bringing in Tahir to bowl the first over. Tahir too, grabbed the opportunity with both hands as he dismissed England opener Jonny Bairstow (0) off just his second delivery. However, England performed reasonably well despite the early hiccup.
