London: Former West Indies captain and chairman of selectors Clive Lloyd has backed his country’s players opting for lucrative Twenty20 tournaments rather than playing for their national side.

Lloyd, the West Indies’ successful captain of all-time, insisted that his country’s player could not be blamed as everybody wants to secure their future.

He, however, admitted that the national team have to fill the void left by their star players, the Guardian reported.

Key players like Chris Gayle, Keiron Pollard, Samuel Badree, Darren Sammy, Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo have opted to play in the Big Bash league rather than representing their nation.

Meanwhile, the national side struggled to compete against Australia and are trailing 0-2 in the three-match series. They suffered a 177-run loss in the second Test in Melbourne.

With the defeat, West Indies have also extended their winless streak in Test series against Australia to 23 years.
