Massive tree plantation program launched covering all roads, government premises, public areas, farms and houses, coastal forests and mangrove areas to make Diu a green and clean island. Extremely severe Cyclone "Taute" affected Daman and Diu and made landfall east of Diu on 17 May-2021 with wind speed between 160-170 km/h to 185 km/h. The administration is fully committed to make the island a green, clean and diverse Diu (Green, Clean and Colorful) with more green spaces than ever before. Under the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Administration has planned a comprehensive and massive tree plantation program for Diu as a revival plan to make it green and clean.
Accurate forecasts and warnings given by the Indian Meteorological Department were effectively used by the administration in planning to deal with the cyclone. Along with this, the evacuation of people was done in a timely manner, due to which there was no loss of human life of any kind.
However, the cyclone caused extensive damage to trees and uprooted centuries-old trees in the island. More than 16000 trees were destroyed due to the cyclone and around 13,843 trees like coconut, mango, chikoo, banana and other trees which were planted on private land and farm land were destroyed. Due to the storm, there was more damage of trees in Saudwadi of Diu, the exact damage was seen in his given Fudam, Bucharwada and Jolawadi.

Under the inspiration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Territory of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Administration has planned a comprehensive and massive tree plantation program for Diu as a revival plan to make it green and clean. Along with this a scheme called Tree for Tree has been proposed to revive the economy. Both these schemes are being started under the able, dynamic and visionary leadership of the Administrator, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. In the “Tree for Tree” program, each person can get two saplings against the loss of each tree to plant in his field and home. Thus, twice the number of saplings will be provided against the number of trees destroyed from the houses/farms. Under this program, it is proposed to distribute 19,314 high quality saplings of coconut, mango and chikoo against the loss of 9657 trees (8696 coconut, 288 chikoo and 673 mango trees) in Diu.
The Green, Clean and Diverse Rangi Diu program envisages planting of 22 different species of trees on all roads like National Highway 251, main roads and other roads of the district and rural roads. A total of 22 species of trees with a height of 8-10 feet will be planted on both sides of 42.71 km long roads (NH: 11.50 km, MDR: 13.60, ODR: 3.94 and village roads: 13.71 km). All these trees will be based on a theme. The entire road length is divided into 39 sections and each section will have a particular species of tree. A total of 14,142 trees will be planted along the roads. 1155 saplings of fruit trees will also be planted in government premises.
In addition, it is proposed to plant 20,000 saplings in 88 hectares of forest land and 2,50,000 mangroves in 94 hectares of mangrove area for augmentation of forest areas in Phudam. Top priority is being given to the restoration of Hoka trees. The plantation program will continue during Van Mahotsav and will be completed by 30.07.2021. Tree plantation program will be included in every aspect of life and Self Help Groups operating in Diu will be linked with the protection of the trees so planted.
