Will complete the first phase of desilting 30 drains in the Churchgate-Dahisar corridor till May 25

Mumbai : The Western Railway has said that it is working in full swing on pre-monsoon activities to prevent water logging on its tracks during the coming monsoon. WR officials say that it will complete the first phase of desilting the 30 drains in the Churchgate-Dahisar corridor till May 25 which will allow smooth flow of rain water.

However, commuters say that railways make false promises every year and think they have to be prepared for water logging this year too.

“After May 20, there will be joint inspection done by the BMC and WR of all the 30 drains,” WR spokesperson said.

However, commuters say that railways make false promises every year and this year too they have to be prepared for water logging on the tracks. Alka Shete, a WR commuter said, “I am travelling in locals for several years. Every year, railway and BMC promise desilting work but still every monsoon we see water logging.”

However, railway officials also blame the high density rainfall combined with high tide. Additional Railway Manager, WR, Shailesh Gupta said, “The railway tracks needs infrastructural changes. The current rail network is feasible only for rainfall upto 25 mm per hour. But Mumbai last year faced rainfall of 45 mm per hour. Thus, desilting work also does not work at such severe rainfall standards.” the officer added.

TRAINS TO BE DELAYED

WR trains will run 10 to 15 minutes late till Monday, May 16 on account of the drainage cleansing work in the Dadar-Lower Parel corridor as part of its pre-monsoon activity. The work is to be carried out between 13 -16 May. On Friday too, WR commuters were agitated as trains were delayed without any intimation.
