Varun Chakravarthy started playing cricket when he was 13 years old, and when he was 17 he stopped playing cricket after getting rejected from many in age group teams. He went to SRM University in Chennai pursued to get a degree in architecture. after the degree he started working as a freelance architect, but because of his love for cricket he quit his job and joined CromBest Cricket Club as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
He reached to fame in 2018 after while playing for Madurai Panthers in Tamil Nadu Premier League, where he spun Siechem to their maiden title. In the first two seasons of the league, Madurai did not win a single game and their winless streak continued In the first match of TNPL against Dindigul Dragons. Varun, though, had impressed with figures of 0 for 23 in his four overs. Madurai finally sealed their first-ever win in the TNPL in their next game against Chepauk Super Gillies, when Varun took 3 for 16 to help his side defend 153. in the whole tournament Varun bowled 40 overs, of which 125 balls were dots. His economy rate of 4.7 was the best among bowlers who had bowled at least 15 overs.
