Rajasthani Sufi-Folk With Mame Khan & Group

What: Manganiyars are hereditary caste musicians of western Rajasthan, the region that boasts of a rich secular tradition of folk as well Sufi repertoire. Besides being keepers of genealogy for their Hindu patrons, the Manganiyar community has its own magical style called jangra, which includes energetic voices and mesmerising sounds of native instruments like kamaicha, khadtal and morchang. Mame Khan belongs to a family of singers from the Jaisalmer region. Besides live events in several countries, he has sung for popular Bollywood movies such as No One Killed Jessica and Luck By Chance and recently won the GiMA award for ‘Best Folk Single’ for his album Saawan in 2016. Khan will present works of Sufi poets of Sindh and Rajasthan, including Mira Bai, Kabir, Lal Shahbâz Qalandar, Bulleh Shah and Baba Ghulam Farid.

Sufiana Songs by Rekha Bhardwaj

What: The core idea of love, longing and union with the beloved, as espoused in the Sufi songs has an evergreen appeal with people from all walks of  life, transcending the man made boundaries of region, religion, caste and creed. Today, besides the traditional repertoire, a large number of songs are sung under the Sufi label. These compositions show a marked influence of contemporary idioms and expressions, and are widely popular with the masses. Rekha Bhardwaj has trained with several stalwarts including Vasant Thakar, Vinay Chandra Mudgal and Amarnathji of the Kirana gharana. Since the past two decades and more, she has sung for numerous films in Hindi and other regional languages. Her songs in Delhi 6, Ishqiya and 7 Khoon Maaf have won her two Filmfare awards and a National award. Bhardwaj’s presentation will include a bouquet of sufiana compositions from traditional repertoire and also songs based in Bollywood.
