Mumbai: Armymen proved they are the best in business as Karan Singh and Shankar Man Thapa took top honours in the men’s full marathon and half marathon in a telling fashion. The defending champion Karan Singh bettered his last year’s timing by two minutes and seven seconds, in the Indiabulls Homes Loans Vasai Virar Mayors Marathon, which was flagged off from the New Viva College, Virar on Sunday.
With the cool conditions favouring the runners, the race took off at a fast pace, it was Lalji Yadav who emerged the early leader. And in all there were eight runners including Karan Singh who set the pace in the run, and they were together till the 25-km.
It was here the Armyman Karan Singh took control and broke away from the bunch, sounding his intention clear. And it was all the way Karan Singh who timed 2:22.17, 41 seconds ahead of Lalji Yadav (2:22.58) and 2013 champion Sanvroo Yadav, followed them later to finich third.
The men’s half marathon was won by another Armyman Shankar Man Thapa in 1:05.48, improving on his third position from last which saw him finish in 1:0728. He was followed by Durga Bahadur Singh (1:06.04) and Govind Singh (1:06.04). The women’s half marathon was won by Prajakta Godbole with a time of 1:18.56, followed by Manju Yadav (1:19.30) and Aarti Patil 1:19.50 in that order.
