Ujjain: The talents of traditional Indian game—malkhambh—will be having a great opportunity to attract the attention of sports lovers during a three-day National Malkhambh Championship, scheduled to begin here from February 18. Participants from across the country will be reaching the city by late Thursday.

Preparations for the grand event are going on in full swing at the venue, Madhav Seva Nyas, adjacent to Mahakaleshwar Temple. All-India Malkhambh Federation has been organising the championships for the third time in Ujjain (after 1995 and 2014). Ujjain Municipal Corporation, Madhav Seva Nyas and sports and youth welfare department are also contributing in successful hosting of the programme.

Event convener municipal speaker Sonu Gehlot told Free Press that teams from about 22 states were likely to participate. Most of the state teams would comprise 39 members. The championship is being organised in eight categories including four each of male and female groups. A procession of the participants will commence at 9.30 am from Madhav College and conclude at the venue, which will be followed by the opening ceremony.
