Bhayandar: A 13-year-old boy who is allegedly involved in a spate of petty thefts in the region landed into the custody of the Kashimira police on Tuesday.

Interestingly, the boy made an unsuccessful attempt to outsmart the police personnel by pretending to be deaf and dumb when he was caught in the act. According to the police, on May 20, the accused had sneaked into an apartment in Mira Village and stole two mobile phones and a purse containing cash and other important documents.

“After  a complaint was registered with us, we immediately scanned the CCTV footage and got an image of the suspect, copies of which were distributed to all our patrolling units in the division,” said Senior Police Inspector Vilas Sanap.

On Tuesday police personnel spotted a similar looking boy in the Munshi Compound area of Kashimira, but when they tried to question him, he not only pretended to be deaf and dumb but also showed a judicial certificate issued fro Hyderabad, declaring he was hearing and speech impaired.

Sensing something fishy the personnel accosted the boy to the police station. Since the suspect was a minor, the investigators adopted a soft approach to question the boy and tactfully managed to  unveil the reality.

It emerged that the boy was trained for the act by some of his relatives and was involved in a spate of mobile thefts in and around the region.
