Seven-year-old Shayaan Udeshi is a young upcoming tabla artist. His musical journey started at the age of three with playing the tabla with his father. His parents later enrolled him at Saptak School of Music, which is one of the most renowned Hindustani classical music schools in the world.
“When I was two-three years old, I would hear dad play tabla; it was his form of meditation, and I would also try my hand at it. Soon, he asked me to play with him and started teaching me basic bols. Even at three, I could easily manage to learn whatever he taught me and catch on pretty fast; that’s what my dad tells everyone.
“I had a great memory with bols and tukdas, so we started from basic bols, growing gradually to difficult tukdas. Seeing my aptitude for music, my parents enrolled me at Saptak School of music which was a lot of fun. My class, usually of 45 minutes, would extend to 1.30 hours as I would continue to play. The best thing is my gurus never scolded me for any mistake, encouraging me instead.
“Soon, I also started exploring and creating my own tukdas, but this never hampered with my riyaz. After school, I still sit at my riyaz for an hour, and daily I target playing single bols about 500 times apiece. I also listen to many artists online and emulate their styles.”
“It was played by my dad and after I started playing I enjoyed every bit of it. But I want to learn other percussion and string instruments to understand their confluence with the tabla.”
Significance of music
“Music can unite the world, and peace and love can prevail.”
Performing with prodigies
“We uploaded short videos on social media platforms to document my growth in music. I was lucky that Kartik–Nirali of Maati Baani saw potential in me to be a part of such a wonderful video, Heal the World as a tribute to MJ, with other amazing prodigies of the world. I find it lucky that the song also addresses the same morals of love and peace that I envision.”
“To all children whose passion is music, jump right into it and don’t look back. It will only lead to happiness. And this is not just for children but goes for everyone that they follow what their heart loves.”
Unity and peace
“I will be performing at the 10th edition of the TEDxGateway Dec 2018 as part of the ensemble of Maati Baani. If given a chance, I will speak about my journey and my plan to spread the message of unity and peace through my music.”
Shayaan performed with other child prodigies of the world in the Michael Jackson tribute song, Heal the World, cover by Maati Baani which has been watched more than 60 million times on YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms. He was the youngest of the performers.
(This 10th edition of the TEDxGateway sees over 20+ speakers from different walks of life sharing unique ideas that make them an inspiration the world over. Over 5500 attendees are slated to attend this feast of ideas and inspiration on December 2 at DOME @ NSCI Mumbai.)
