Palghar : The Shiv Sena candidate Amit Ghoda won the Palghar by-polls hands down, defeating the Congress candidate, Rajendra Gavit, by a margin of 18, 948 votes.

The by-poll was closely contested as Gavit, the sitting MLA, had lost the 2014 assembly polls by a mere 515 votes to the Sena candidate, Krushna Ghoda.

People attribute this success to the sympathy wave and also to the saffron alliance. The third party in the fray was the party from Vasai – Virar, the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) which had also staked its claim after their last year’s sweep at the VVMC corporation elections where they had won 106 seats of the 115 fought.

While Amit Ghoda secured his assembly seat on Tuesday by garnering 67,129 votes, Gavit got 48,181 votes, a difference of 18, 948 votes, while the BVA was placed third at 36,781 votes. Election was held on February 13 and the voting percentage was recorded at 65%.

This by-poll was contested the sitting MLA Kurshna Ghoda had passed away due to heart attack in may 2015.
