New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Thursday banned, with immediate effect, all sand and bajri mining in Rajasthan, going on with impunity without any environment clearance “for several months, if not years”.

The Bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta sought an affidavit from the Chief Secretary within four weeks and ordered listing the matter immediately after four weeks, restraining itself to hear him first before giving credence to the allegation that the state government is complicit with the miners.

It expressed shock that the environment ministry was not concerned about degradation of environment and still worse, the state is totally unconcerned about it.
