Shayaris: Our ten most poignant picks from Ghalib to Gulzar

Urdu is the sweetest language in world which gets so much better when heard in the form of ‘Shayaris’ (poem) and beautiful couplets. ‘Shayaris’ is the most beautiful face of Urdu language and these words comes from the heart of Shayars (poet).

The pain of heartbreak or the confession of love to your beloved, ‘Shayari’ is a beautiful way to convey an emotion with much depth.

One of the top most Bollywood’s lyrists Gulzar is also Shayar, Nida Fazli who has written songs in movies like Raziya Sultan and Sarfarosh and many more in Bollywood were among the most appreciated Shayar in India. Rahat Indori big face in Urdu language in world is also a big name in Bollywood and has written songs in movies like Munna Bhai MBBS.

Bollywood movie Fanaa, starring Aamir Khan and Kajol was quiet popular for number of ‘Shayaris’ in the film. In one of the movie scene Aamir Khan narrates the following Shayari in praise of Kajol, “Tere dil mein meri saanson ko panaah mil jaye … tere ishq mein meri jaan fanaa ho jaye “. (English Translation – My breath has found place in your heart… and my life has finished in your love)

Similarly who can forget these lines…. “Itni shidaat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai, ki  har zaare ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai”.…( I have wanted you so much, so truly… that the entire universe has conspired for me to get you)  yes yes you got it right its Shahrukh Khan in Om Shanti Om. Even Bollywood takes support of shayaris to express its feelings.

Here are the top Shayaris from well recognized Shayars who just nailed it in their own way, starting from Mirza Galib who is said to be God of shayaris

Mirza Galib:

Hathoon key lakiroon pay mat jaa ae Galib,

Naseeb unkay bhi hotay hain jinkaay haath nahi hotay…

(Don’t rely on the lines on your palm Galib, for even those without hands have their destiny written)

Allama Iqbal:

Jin ke angan mein Ameeri ka shajar lagta hai,

Un ka her aaib bhi zamany ko hunar lagta hai…

(People flock to houses of the riches, and even their mistakes are seen as talent)

Meer Taqi Meer:

Ibtidaa-e-ishq hai rotaa hai kyaa, Aage aage dekhiye hotaa hai kyaa

(It’s only the beginning of love, why cry?.. wait and watch what happens as you move ahead)

Faiz Ahmad Faiz:

Aur bhi gham hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke siva

raahtein aur bhi hain vasl ki raahat ke siva

(There are more sorrows in the world other than love, for there are other nights too other than the night of love)

Ahmad Faraz:

Tor dia tasbee ko is khayal se Faraz

kya gin gin ke nam lena uska jo behisab deta hai

(I broke the tasbee (kind of rosary) of my devotion, for why should we count and worship his name who gives us abundantly)

Rahat Indori:

Log Har Mod Pe Ruk Ruk Ke Sambhalate Q Hain Itna Darte Hain To Phir Ghar Se Nikalate Q Hain Main Na Jugnu Hun Na Diya Hun Na Koi Tara Hun Roshni Wale Mere Naam Se Jalate Q Hain

(Why do people walk so very cautiously, if they fear so much why they step out of their homes, I am not a glow worm, nor am I a lamp or a star yet why do people envy me)

Munawwar Rana:

Kisi Ko Ghar Mila Hisse Mein Ya Koi Dukaan Aayee, Main Sab Se Chota Tha Ghar Mein Mere Hisse Mein Maa Aayee.

(Some got house as their share, some shop, I was the youngest in the house, so I got my mother as part of my share)

Wasim Barelvi:

Tujhe paane ki koshish mein kuch itna kho chuka hoon main

Ki tu mil bhi agar jaye to ab milne ka gham hoga

(I have lost almost everything in pursuit of you, now even if I get you I would be sad for getting you)

Nida Fazli:

Hoshwalon Ko Khabar Kya Bekhudi Kya Cheez Hai

Ishq Ki Jaye Phir Samajhiye Zindagi Kya Cheez Hai

(Sensible person does not know what senselessness is all about, fall in love then you will come to know what life is all about)

 Gulzar:

Lakeerein hain to rehne do, Kisi ne rooth kar gusse mein shayad kheech di thi

Unhi ko ab banao paala aur aao kabaddi khelte hain Lakeerein hain to rehne do.

(Let borders remain, for someone may have drew them in a fit of anger, just convert them into Kabaddi line and play, even as the borders remain – on India-Pak border)
