Sabyasachi receives backlash for featuring a plus size woman to promote self-confidence on Women’s Day

Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, on International Women’s Day 2019, took to social media to empower women with a special post. Unfortunately, the caption didn’t sit well with his followers. The post showed a plus-size model, sporting an outfit from his collection, with a caption that read, “This International Women’s Day, celebrate confidence.”

While some took to the comments section to praise Sabyasachi for the intent, others questioned the designer’s intention. Suggesting that he means only plus-size models need more encouragement, when he chose to collaborate with a model on the similar lines for this particular post.

@sabina2345’s comment read, “She is gorgeous, but I’m wondering why the self-confidence piece is being emphasized in THIS post. Is it because she looks’different’ than the other models on this page? Isn’t that then reinforcing the stereotype that women should look a certain way? I don’t get it?”

Another by @marasil read, “Why are you suggesting that only average/plus size models need confidence?”

Several users also said Sabyasachi should choose to promote curvy women all year round instead of just on a particular day.
