The demand for region only food delivery services is growing in tandem with the urban lifestyles, finds out Misbaah Mansuri.

Blame it on space or real-estate investment constraints or greater dependence on prepared foods, regional delivery services are witnessing a boom. The efficiency of the online business is being leveraged, bringing us to an era where one doesn’t even need to step out of the comfort of their homes for fine-dining. Be it comfort food or delicacies from a culture you wish to try out, delivery services are getting it all for many reasons!

No financial crunches

The change can be attributed to the demand for shelling out a bomb for infrastructure and other investments to set up a restaurant. Regional deliveries facilitate higher efficiencies, reduce transaction costs and transport hassles. With lower investments in furniture, interiors, rentals and real estate, the region only delivery services phenomenon is bound to grow. “You get great food in the comfort of your home/office. Also, you don’t pay crazy taxes, and in this weather you don’t get caught in the rain!” says Neha Manekia who along with her husband Joshua D’souza and Auroni Mookerjee started the delivery enterprise Curry Brothers which serves traditional flavours with a modern twist.

A win-win for both sides

We can attribute it to the role of apps and web-based ordering which makes the delivery process just but easier than it used to be. Come weekend and food hubs witness great rush. For customers, ordering in means more time to interact with each other rather than worrying about time constraints in a restaurant. “With more quality time that can be spent with each other and food which doesn’t compromise on the taste aspect, ordering in seems to be attracting more customers over time,” says Ammar Salema, a culinarian.

Culture palate and convenience foods

Convenience food and authentic foods are poised to grab more space. Revitalizing regional gourmet experiences is one of the aspects for the rise of delivery services. “We realized that there is a demand for Sindhi Cuisine. Also, I realized that due to the busy working life, a large section of people prefer calling for food home,” says Sannat Ahuja, former Holachef employee who along with his mother Kanchan Ahuja started the home delivery venture Sindhful Khar. Munaf Kapadia who also runs the delivery service The Bohri Kitchen along with his mother Nafisa Kapadia echoed similar sentiments. “A lot of non Bohris who want to try Bohri food are unable to make it to our home dining experiences because of our limited capacity and so delivery makes it easier for them to try Bohri food via a phone call,” explains Munaf.

Price parameters

For customers, we can say that the foreknowledge of costs and no hefty taxes eases anxiety. “We are easily drawn to the delivery services phenomenon because there are no surprise costs attached which helps conscious customers plan,” says Arib Tiselkar who frequents opting for delivery services. Also, the work cultures which sap people of any energy to be able to cook is another factor attached to why people don’t mind splurging a bit even though the price points are just similar to some restaurants.
