Ramadan myths busted: Misconceptions about fasting during the Islamic holy month

Ramadan, the holy month of Muslims, is just around the corner and it has most important place in Muslim culture. It is said that all your sins can be cut down to zero if you worship with your heart open and help those who are in need. Ramadan is not all about fasting, it is the combination of many things from visiting mosques to reciting Quran. It has a special place in Islam and out of five pillars in Islam, fasting is one of them.

Islam is a religion which sees its followers help the poor and less fortunate throughout their lifetimes. While hungry and thirsty throughout the fasting day, Muslims have a constant reminder of the suffering of the poor in less fortunate parts of the world. Ramadan allows worshippers to concentrate their minds on devotion to their faith through prayers, expressing gratitude, seeking forgiveness and helping the needy. In some Muslim countries, it’s a crime to fail to observe the fasting.

There’s is an air of mystery surrounding the practice and confusion related Ramadan, so we have tried to bust some of the myths which people think are mandatory to do.

Muslim people are not allowed to eat and drink for the whole month.

No. The fast starts from the Fazar Azan and continues till Maghrib Azan so in between Fazar and Maghrib, you are not allowed to eat and drink anything, and this will continue till every day for 30 days.

Brushing teeth is not okay.

 Personal hygiene is the most important part in Islam, In fact, maintaining good personal hygiene is considered to be very important within the religion. So brushing is allowed but not when your are fasting . Before and after fast you can brush and in between you fast you can use ‘miswak’. It is a teeth cleaning twig made from the Salvadora persica tree or a neem tree. Even miswak has many health benefits.

It is mandatory to fast?

Yes, it is mandatory to fast but for only those people who are fit. People who are ill and who are on medicine, they are allowed to quit fasting, Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also exempt, as are those on their periods. If you are travelling or on a long journey, you’re also permitted to eat and drink as normal. Young children and the elderly are not expected to fast.

Swallowing your own saliva will break your fast.

 This is wrong and no one can stop people from his gulping saliva. Ramadan is not supposed to be unrealistic, unattainable or unreasonable.

You can drink water while fasting.

 Unfortunately not! You can’t drink water while you are fasting and can even eat food, nothing at all.

Date of Ramadan is fixed every year.

Ramadan is the nine month in Islamic calendar, and Ramadan begins on the sighting of the new moon, which marks the beginning of the month. It moves about 11 days each year in the Gregorian calendar, which is based on the solar year.

Ramadan is all about fasting. No water and food while fasting.

Ramadan is not about fasting. This holy month of Ramadan helps Muslims to cleanse their inner soul .During daylight hours, Muslims also abstain from smoking, fighting, swearing, negative gossiping and sex. It’s about having self-restraint and having the mind-space to focus on the religion.

You are not allowed to eat in front of someone who is fasting.

Ramadan teaches patience, and person who is fasting will not have a negative impact on him if he sees any one eating. So eating in front of someone who is fasting is absolutely fine.

If you eat something by mistake your fast is ruined.

Islam doesn’t punish those sins which are done unintentionally. So, if you have eaten or have drunk something by mistake you can continue your fast.

Fasting is detrimental to your health.

Islam teaches that you shouldn’t do anything that compromises your health. Muslims have fasted since the religion was founded, and history has proven it to be safe. In fact, some even believe there may be some health benefits, but this is a topic that is often debated.
