Actor/ comedian Rajpal Yadav was sentenced to three-month civil prison in a loan default case. Yadav was immediately taken into custody by the Delhi Police after the Delhi High Court order was pronounced on November 30th. While serving sentence as inmate number 252 in Tihar jail Rajpal recently performed a comedy act on stage as part of ongoing kavi sammelan programme.
Talking to Hindustan times a jail officer said, “His act was a laugh riot. There were several poets on the stage but Yadav made sure everyone laughed. Everyone was awestruck to see a celebrity on stage.” According to the officer, it’s been years since some famous celebrity came to jail.
“Tihar has had big politicians, cricketers, gangsters and terrorists but this is the first time in decades that the jail has had a popular actor as an inmate. He is keeping everyone in good humour. The inmates were excited to see a popular actor on the dais.”
According to the officer, Rajpal did stand-up comedy in the meet where he narrated a story to fellow inmates. Officers also said that inmates talk to Yadav about his movies and the actors he has worked with. Another senior officer revealed that Yadav often talks to fellow inmates and the officer suspects that they are planning to do a play on Christmas. “The inmates have asked him to direct it. It will be released for Christmas. They told us that they have planned to start a drama club in jail 7,” the officer said.
Yadav is currently being kept at jail number 7, and while talking to the Hindustan Times Joginder Singh Sehrawat, superintendent of jail number 7, said, “Yadav’s conduct has been good. He has not made any demands or asked to be treated differently. He spends his time in the library. We treat him like any other prisoner.”
