On Sunday morning a 40-year-old Dalit rag-picker was beaten to death by unidentified men at Shapar village in Rajkot. After a video went viral on social media, where it was seen that the 40-year-old was mercilessly beaten up by men, the police launched an investigation.
The deceased was identified as Mukesh Savji Vaniya (40). The incident took place when the deceased, his wife and an acquaintance named Savita were picking trash near Radadiya Factory in Shapar-Veraval area. The trio got into an argument with some factory men. Later, the argument turned violent and Vaniya was beaten to death.
Sub-Inspector R G Sindhu told Indian Express, “The exact reason for the altercation has not become clear so far. But the complainant has alleged that it was something related to picking rags around the factory. The complainant and other woman had gone to their home while Mukesh was allegedly held captive by the unidentified accused. The two women then returned back to the spot along with some male members when they found Mukesh lying on the ground. They took him to Rajkot Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.”
The police have registered an offence of murder and other charges against five unidentified persons under the Indian Penal Code and Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act following a complaint lodged by the victim’s wife. According to reports, all five men have now been detained.
