Producer of Marathi film ‘Vantas’, 3 aides held for stealing gold

MUMBAI: The Mumbai crime branch unit-2 has arrested four persons, including the producer of Marathi film ‘Vantas’, for stealing gold worth Rs 2.40 crore. After incurring huge losses, Amol Lavate (29), the producer, mortgaged his property and set up a jewellery manufacturing unit at Kalbadevi.

The complainant, Devendra Bafna, a jeweller, had handed over gold worth Rs 2.40 crore to his manager Kunder Singh for making ornaments. Artisans Appa and Popatrao were supposed to melt gold in front of Kunder. However, after Kunder went to sleep at the jewellery unit, Lavate, his cousin Sandeep Lavate (26) and two artisans, Appa Gherade (33) and Popatrao Aatpadikar (30) locked the unit and fled with the gold. On July 31, police intercepted Amol’s car and arrested Sandeep, Appa and Popatrao from Mankhurd.
