Mumbai : Women’s third seed Preeti Khedekar and fourth seed Sneha More crashed out in the pre-quarter-finals on a dramatic day of upsets, in the JVPG 1st Joint District Carrom Tournament, at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana.
Bombay YMCA winner Khedekar, who won the opening game in the best-of-three contest, was shocked by Radhika Joshi of Thane who rallied to a 0-25, 25-6, 25-0 win. With the win over Khedekar, Joshi turned giant-killer after her earlier upset over former junior state champion Urmila Shendge in the first round.
Top seed Maitreyee Gogate and second seed Ayesha Mohammed led the remaining seeds into the quarter-finals with impressive wins. Among the significant losers was former national champion and nine-time state champion Anupama Kedar who went down to Gogate in straight games.
Men’s fourth seed Rajesh Gohil of Thane survived a scare before snatching an exciting fourth round win. Gohil dropped a tight opening game before recovering to beat Mangesh of Mumbai Suburban 15-25, 25-4, 25-0.
